Miles / points for upgrade at DELTA / Continental domestic flight?

Based on your experience, how many points/miles needed to upgrade from coach/economy class to business/first class on US domestic flights (DELTA and Continental)? Is it based on the distance or is it on fix rate such as 5000 miles from your frequent flyer miles deducted? I read the info on the website of frequent flyers but it is not completely informative, so I would like to know based on your experience. Thanks for your info.

1. The miles it costs is based on flights within the continental US. Then different to Hawaii. Then they go into miles to upgrade if travelling to South America, or Europe, etc. You also have to pay a really high price for your coach ticket to get the upgrade. Like you couldn't buy a really cheap internet special fair and then use the miles to upgrade. I know on Continental it has to be a Y or H fair. The best way to upgrade is to get Silver, Gold or Elite status but of course you have to travel a bit to get that.
