  1. Most likely the Strut is either bad or has come loose from its mounts. If it was Bad, it would be sitting Really low...the Compressor would be coming on all the time...the light on the dash would be on...etc. Trust me...I used to own one. You DO NOT repeat DO NOT need to replace these in pairs. They are independantly adjustable Air operated struts. When I had one get a leak, I went to the salvage yard, had them pull a good one off a dead car and took it to my mechanic to install. I paid $50 for a good used strut and $75 for installation. These struts are either good or bad...no in between. Also, is this car MINT condition, low miles? You might consider the conversion to get rid of the air ride suspension. The parts cost about $500 and another $200 to install. This converts it to a traditional Metal Coil Spring suspension with regular shocks and struts. It wont 'Float' like a Lincoln anymore (it will ride like a Taurus) but no more surprise Air Ride Problems. Good Luck!
  2. agree w above answer but before you jump to conclusions, use a very systematic process to precisely isolate the location of the noise. rattling noise could be from any number of problems, loose air strut press control valves or hoses, a loose bolt, possible loose sway bar link, deteriorating rubber bushings, rattling in exhaust system, the list could really be endless. noises are sometimes a bear to diag.
