Cold, humid air masses that bring fog to the West Coast are continental polar air masses.?

true or false?

Public Comments

  1. false. Fog along the west coast is mostly contact fog cause by when the air above the ocean comes into contact with the cold water (Humboldt current) and cools below the dew point thus forming fog. The fog is brought in over the coast because of inland heating air which is rising.
  2. No. The West Coast has what's called "advection fog." Cool, moist Maritime Polar air, from the Gulf of Alaska, is advected over the cold California Current and coastal upwelling. It's cooled from below by the cold water until saturation is reached and fog/stratus forms.
