Using Summer Tires Year Round?

The tires from the link below seem to be a pretty good option for my 2005 Chrysler Pacifica. I live in Chattanooga, TN. I'm just looking for some long-lasting tires, size 235/55-19. These Continentals have good tread life and get good ratings. Can summer tires be used year round though? http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Continental&tireModel=CrossContact+UHP&partnum=355VR9CCXL&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes&place=2

  1. Summer tires should only be used year round if you will never drive in snow & slush. They become useless in such weather. For your vehicle, you'd be better off with some decent all-season tires. A Pacifica does not handle well enough to take advantage of true summer tires. Go to www.tirerack.com, and you'll find the tires you need at a great price.
  2. Not if you live where it gets below freezing or snows. There is a reason they are called "summer" tires. They only work well in warm, preferably dry weather. Below about 45 degrees the rubber gets hard as a rock and won't grip well even on a dry road. In any kind of snow you may not be able to exit your own driveway and they could be suicidal to drive on the road. I seriously mean no traction. If your weather conditions include any of the above then your only choice is the Michelin MXM4. If it never snows and never gets below freezing then the Conti will be fine.
  3. you should get all ,season tires for your weather conditions, also look into 4 winter tires with rims on that site they have great deals on them its very good to have 4 snows it with stop better turn better handle lots better and key thing with be safer
  4. if you have good tread , it the driver that counts.you can drive all year. been driving a long time in new england . never got stuck driving in snow . even in ski country . if it's over a foot you should be out. other drivers can cause gridlock and no matter tires or drivers , your are in trouble. never had a four wheel vehicle until 5 years a ago.. love it.
  5. if it snows down there, it owuldn't be a good idea because summer tires aren't good on snow.
  6. The tires will work well through all the seasons in Florida. There are plenty of grooves that will stop the tire from hydro-planing in the rain. The tires you are looking at also will be great when cornering with the boat you drive. The tires are just not meant for snow. Many people end up with summer only tires because they order a sport package option for their new vehicle. The sport package usually includes stiffer springs and performance gas shocks/struts but people miss the fact that the tires that come with the package are performance tires rated only for dry and wet roads, not snow.
