Continental polar air masses form in regions where the atmosphere is?

Either Stable Convective Unstable I can check all three or two or just one of those options. I'm just so confused because my book doesn't talk about if the atmosphere is stable or unstable. If you could help that would be great!!! :)

  1. The atmosphere is stable if the surface temperatures are colder than the air aloft. In polar regions, this is often the case. Cold, dry air sinks while less dense air is found above it. With that being said, continental polar air masses form in regions where the atmosphere is stable. Maritime tropical air masses are the opposite. Warm, moist air is less dense than cold, dry air, which causes the atmosphere to be unstable.
