- Baby items that you carry in your diaper bag do not have to meet the normal 3 oz rule regarding liquids. You are allowed to carry milk, breast milk and other items as needed for the baby in quantities that would normally be used for the duration of the flight.
- Presume that as you are not checking any bags, this is a short trip. Why not check to see whether you can purchase the baby formula powder at your destination ? Saves all the hassle of checking stuff through security. Alternatively, does the airport you are flying from have a pharmacy/chemist that is airside (i.e. in the duty free purchase area once you have passed through security) Could check if they stock formula powder. In theory, powder is not covered by the carry on restrictions, whereas formula milk in liquid form is.
- I'm a former Flight Attendant and I fly a lot with my three children. Good news! Any liquids that are meant for a baby are allowed in "reasonable quantities". They're not even interested in powders. There is no restriction on that. The liquids also don't have to specifically be in the diaper bag. Avoid lugging a big can of formula on board. I really recommend using the bottles with plastic liners. Traditional bottles are too difficult to wash onboard because of the kind of sinks on airplanes. I premeasured the powder and rolled them up, placing the rolls in a zip lock bag. Then I threw the liners away as I used them and only had the ring and nipple to clean. You can easily bring two days' worth in one small zip lock and that would buy you some time to get some when you arrive. Can you order on line and have a can of formula (along with diapers, wipes, etc.) waiting for you when you arrive. Yes, hotels often will do this for you if you have a reservation (just did this last month on my trip). If you use bottled water, in theory, you should be able to bring a bottle on board. If you don't mind paying the steep prices at the airport, you could buy it once past security (give yourself enough time). Make sure you have enough! The water on the aircraft is filtered tap so decide if you're comfortable using that for your baby if you want to skip dragging the bottles along. Bottled water runs out fast on flights and we never had any extra for baby bottles. Be sure your baby does not need the bottle warmed. Get him used to a room-temperature bottle before leaving. This is unnecessary health-wise and a real pain to do while traveling. I warmed many bottles on my flights but I wasn't there in the check-in line, the security line or the waiting area! Babies do great with room-temperature bottles. For more information, I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with kids. It's totally non-commercial and other parents have contributed; http://flyingwithchildren.blogspot.com Have a good trip!
- you already have good answers so heres a funny one. most of the time they will open the bottle and check the milk or formula. just as the security guy goes in for the smell (yes they often smell the milk) remind him that its breast milk and its for the baby only. he may sniff but no tasting. makes having to put your shoes back on and reload the stroller a lot more fun, when you can just think back to the look on his face. enjoy ur trip
