Will I have to get my baggage from one airline to another connecting airline flight?

I am flying United airlines from Chicago Ohare to Frankfurt Germany then connecting on Lufthansa airlines to Nuremberg Germany. I am getting conflicting answers from both airlines. All I want to know does my checked in baggage get loaded on by the airlines to my connecting flight? Or do I have to claim it at the baggage counter in Frankfurt Germany and re check it in on my connecting flight myself?

1. You will have to clear customs in Frankfurt and therefore will need to get your luggage. However, it is possible for United to check your baggage all the way through to Nuremberg, particularly if you purchased the tickets on the same itinerary. Even if you didn't, ask the gate agent to do it for you. Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't. If you do get it checked all the way through, then you can just drop it on the belt outside of customs rather than go to ticketing and check it with Lufthansa.
