Can I lower the load rating on my tires without any problems?

I have a 2005 Audi S4 Cabriotlet with tires that have a load rating of XL 95. I am searching for replacement tires and found the Continental Contact DWS all season tire in my size but it has a load rating of 91 and no XL designation. What could happen if I replace my tires with these? The size is 235/40R18 if that matters.

  1. The load rating will have little or no effect as long as it is above the combined weight of the car and passengers. Speed rating might be a problem if you drive fast or play indy on the roads.
  2. The rating of 91 doesn't matter so much; the *range* does. A conscientious installer will balk if you ask him to step you down. There are plenty of all-season tires that carry an XL range and don't cost a bundle more than the Conti DWS. You might look into the Sumitomo HTR Z II or the Yokohama Avid W4S.
