What are the Canadian Airlines regulations on bringing a dog on the plane, travelling from ON to california?

I'm going to be travelling from Ontario, Canada to California, and I have a small, short-legged jack russell terrier. I want to bring him on the plane with me, as I've read that small dogs are allowed in the cabin area in appropriate carrying cases, according to certain American Airlines. Are the rules the same for Canadian Airlines?
