Update the name on an airline ticket?

I booked a trip for my daughter and her friend for spring break. Only to find out that I have the wrong last name for her friend. Does anyone have any experience dealing with Continental Airlines when he comes to updated the name on a ticket? I am not trying to transfer the ticket just change the last name! HELP!

  1. There usually is a name change fee from $50-100. If you call the airline, or possibly go to the airport early enough, they may let you slide. It doesn't hurt to try.
  2. Some people do make mistakes with the name on an air ticket, but they are usually minor in that it's easy to see and prove it's really a typo or confusion and the corrected name is really the same person, e.g. misspelling the name with 1-2 alphabets, switching the first, middle last name, using the maiden name instead of a married one etc. In your case, it would depend if the airline believes you genuinely made a mistake or are not trying to give the ticket to another person. Most airlines do not allow transfer of tickets. Hopefully when you first booked the ticket you submitted his date of birth, this could prove the 2 different names are the same person.
