With what airline do I check in?
I will be flying to the UK. I booked my ticket via Continental Airlines but it says "Operated By: Virgin Atlantic". I also have a flight later from the UK to Germany and it is through Lufthansa but "Operated By: BMI".

- Check in with Continental and Lufthansa. The other airlines are operating the flights, but won't have information on your reservations. Edit: Mmmkay, so I regularly book my boss on United Airlines flights that are operated by other carriers (Singapore Air, etc.). He checks in at the United desk...exclusively. Again, you've made the reservation with Continental. There's no reason to believe that Virgin will have any record of said reservation. They own the plane, and will be staffing the flight, but don't know who's supposed to be on the flight.
- You go to the Virgin Atlantic desk. You'll receive your boarding passes for both the Virgin and the BMI segment. Then when you transfer, you'll be flying BMI. These are called codeshare flights. A lot of airlines are in airline alliances or airline partnerships. They will sometimes sell tickets on their site on behalf of the partner.
- If it is operated by VA then you check in with them obviously
- You check-in at the airline that operates the flight so it would be Virgin Atlantic and then later BMI.
- When a plane has a different operator that means that you will be on a plane owned and flown by that operator. You check in with whoever is operating the flight. In your case, Virgin and BMI. As to the first answer: I call BS. I travel frequently and I´m speaking from first hand experience, not what I´ve heard from my boss, friends, or anyone else. PS- of course the operating airline has not only the right but the responsibility to know who is traveling on their aircraft.
