  1. Firstly you have to be a member of Continentals frequent flyer program (or maybe if they are in an alliance with other airlines, you may be able to use points from other airlines) If you have enough frequent flier miles and there is a seat available you could be upgraded. If this is your first flight with continental, join the frequent flyer programme and start saving those points.
  2. The frequent flier programs are what is known as loyalty programs designed to try and keep you flying on one carrier or (in the case of alliance programs) one group of carriers. The programs work by providing awards based on mileage flown. The key here is that the mileage must first be flown before any reward can be redeemed. In your case you won't accumulate the 12,000 miles for your trip until you return home. See where this is headed? Now that you have 12,000 miles in your account you'll be more inclined to use this same carrier on your next trip so that you might be able to use these points toward an upgrade (or another prize available in the program.) Generally the amount of prize points needed to redeem an award depends on the class of service of the ticket you've purchased. Basically, the more discounted the fare, the more points necessary to redeem the award. Let's assume you are traveling from Europe to the US and back. You would receive the 12,000 miles in your OnePass (Continentals frequent flier program) account after your travel is complete. Say next year you decide to make the same journey. If you purchased a full fare Y class ticket (usually the highest price available for that particular ticket, fully refundable, no restrictions) then you would probably be eligible for a one way upgrade that would cost you 10,000 points. However, if you purchased a discounted ticket for the same flight, then it could possibly cost you up to 20,000 points plus $500 to obtain the same one-way upgrade. In short, it is wise to sign up for the frequent flier programs of those airlines you think you might travel on before you ever do any travelling. That way you can start collecting mileage with your first flight. and besides, it doesn't cost anything to join.
