- Relax. I've flown Continental 757's between the US and Ireland. There were no problems. What is it that concerns you? If you're referring to the recent minor controversy over the 757's suitability for transatlantic flights, then you should not worry. It's the range of the aircraft that matters, not the size. The maximum range of a 757-200 is approximately 4,500 miles. The distance from London Gatwick to Newark is 3,466 miles. That gives it a 1,000 mile extra margin. The news reports that you may have heard about range problems refer to longer flights than London-New York. Commercial airplanes cannot legally take off unless they carry enough fuel to reach their destination plus extra fuel to reach an alternate airport with better weather plus enough fuel to hold for a minimum length of time. In case of an extensive delay, the pilot will simply divert to another an airport and pick up some extra fuel. The 757 is not the most comfortable aircraft for transatlantic travel if you're flying in economy class. However, there is nothing dangerous about it.
- As a Continental Flight Attendant for 23 years, I find myself flying the B757-200 to Europe frequently. While I'll agree that a widebody is head over heels more comfortable than a single aisle aircraft, at no time have I ever felt unsafe flying aboard the aircraft on any of it's transatlantic crossings. The day that should happen is the day I retire. Keep in mind...Pilots have families too...do you really think they would put themselves (much less their passengers and fellow crew members) in danger?? Relax. The aircraft is fully certified to make the trip. It's made many...and will continue to make many more...all will no problem.
