What gives a continental plate the force to push another continental plate?

as the two continental plate collides, one plate would probably pushed the other.wat gives it the force to push?

Public Comments

  1. momentum and friction with the convecting magma under it.
  2. The force is from convection. All plates connected pushing or pulling apart. Two plates subducting, the less dense plate goes under. This is usually the oceanic plate since water is less dense than rock. If two continental plats collide, you get roll back system or create huge mountain belts like the Himalayas or the ancient Appalachians. Convection= magma= volatile escape
  3. Mass
  4. Sea floor speading is the current cause. Faults in the ocean floor release lava and eventually spread the floor apart. All friction and movement is caused from the movements at faults, but it is ultimately the seafloor spreading causing fault movement, mountain formation, etc.
  5. The plates are like rafts floating in the sea of magma on the mantle zone
