How did the theory of Continental Drift develop into theory of Plate Tectonics?

How did the theory of Continental Drift, as propounded by Alfred Wegener, develop into the broader theory of Plate Tectonics? Could someone summarize, instead of pasting links to long articles? Thanks!

  1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plate_tectonics
  2. Because the continents drifted along these plate lines, sometimes running into each other, creating mountains etc.
  3. The scientist discovered the plates along the coastes of where the Supercontinent splite
  4. It's the SAME thing
  5. Well, for starters it isn't called the "Theory" of Plate tectonics anymore. With the advent of GPS technology the movement of the earth's plates is a documented fact. The whole plate movement thing really took hold with the first visits to the mid Atlantic ridge by deep submersibles back in the 60's and 70's. Further gravimetric studies proved the expansion of the sea floor at a steady and measurable rate.
