  2. The Continental Army was just that, an army. After Valley Forge, these men were every bit as good as the Brits. Look what happened at Monmouth in June of 1778. They fought the Brits to a draw and perhaps even bested them in some areas. The militia, on the other hand, usually came out when there was "danger" in their county or state. All men between the ages of 16 and 60 had to fall out once a month to drill. Their primary focus was on their farms, families and businesses. They were notoriously unreliable. Fire a few shots and run. They, nor their leaders, would have gotten the respect as was shown in the movie, "The Patriot." The fact that militia could not be relied upon created tension between them and the regulars. If you think someone has your back and then they run when you need them, you will have a rather ill opinion of them.
